Speckled trout

Cynoscion nebulosus (Cuvier, 1830) · Spotted seatrout

  • active
  • inshore tier
  • flats zone
  • Sciaenidae

Speckled trout hold in 50–88°F water (optimum 72°F) and 5–35 PSU salinity. Crepuscular feeder: Ambush predator that feeds hardest at dawn and dusk on the flats and in the first trough. Small trout eat shrimp and small crustaceans; slot-size and larger trout eat mostly fish. Seasonal migrant: Estuarine and short-ranging (FishBase calls it non-migratory), with a strong seasonal habitat shift: winter in deep holes, creeks and rivers; spring and fall on the grass flats; early summer along the beaches and pass mouths where the fish spawn. Spawns Apr–Sep (spring-summer).

Field notes

  • Cold-stun symptoms start just below 45°F and trout lose equilibrium at 36–39°F. Fish need deep water to ride out a hard freeze.

    • water temp ≤ 50°F

    — NC Sea Grant / NC DMF; SC DNR

  • In winter, trout of all sizes take refuge in deep holes and sloughs in coastal creeks and rivers.

  • Diet shifts with size, from shrimp and small crustaceans to fish (anchovies first, then larger baitfish).

Group feeding

Small and mid-size trout school loosely over grass and potholes. One fish on usually means more in the same pothole.

Size classes · bigger fish run solitary

School trout run about 14–18 inches. Gator trout (24+ inches) are usually alone, often in skinny water, and key on mullet (angler observation; unverified).

Schooling by phase

Concentrated in deep holes, creek bends and rivers
spring flats
Spread across the grass flats and potholes
summer surf
Along the beaches and pass mouths at dawn; spawning
fall feed
Back on the flats feeding hard on shrimp and baitfish
