Sheepshead
Archosargus probatocephalus (Walbaum, 1792)
- active
- inshore tier
- pass zone
- Sparidae
Sheepshead hold in 50–88°F water (optimum 66°F) and 5–36 PSU salinity. Diurnal feeder: A structure grazer with incisor- and molar-like teeth. Nibbles and crushes barnacles, mussels, oysters and crabs off pilings and rock. A light, tentative biter: the "bait stealer". Seasonal migrant: Inshore around docks, bridges and oyster bars most of the year. From January fish gather in the lower estuaries around deep structure, then spawn February–April near the coast at jetties, passes and nearshore reefs before scattering for the summer. Spawns Feb–Apr (late winter-spring).

A structure grazer with incisor- and molar-like teeth. Nibbles and crushes barnacles, mussels, oysters and crabs off pilings and rock. A light, tentative biter: the "bait stealer".
Field notes
Adults eat mainly mussels, clams, small oysters, barnacles and crabs; juveniles lean toward bivalves and crabs.
— SC DNR sheepshead profile
In Mississippi Sound the diet ranked crustaceans, molluscs, polychaetes and fishes. Fish over about 14 inches add more crustaceans.
— Overstreet & Heard 1982; Louisiana Sea Grant summary
On the northern Gulf, fish gather in the lower estuaries around deep structure from January and do most of their spawning in February–March.

Spawning aggregations form around jetties, channel passes and reefs in roughly 62–73°F water.
- water temp ≤ 73°F

— NC Sea Grant; GCFI 69:103
A structure fish: a crab or barnacle dropped tight to the pilings outfishes any open-sand cast, and moving water over the rocks helps.

Group feeding
Loose groups hold on each piling or rock pile. Spawning-season schools of big fish gather at the jetties and bridge footings.
Size classes
Small fish stay on docks and pilings in summer. Large "convicts" are mostly on jetties, bridges and nearshore reefs in late winter and spring.
